“Charlevoix Woodland”
Ottawa Art Expo is fast approaching and I’m busy with all the preparations. The show’s new website is up and running at www.OttawaArtExpo.com. This is the 4th year and I’m really looking forward to the event as it draws large crowds and the response is so enthusistic. An added plus is free admission and parking. Hope to see many of my friends and meet new ones on Saturday, Oct. 27 and Sunday, October 28, at the St. Elias Centre, 750 Ridgewood Avenue, Ottawa, 10 am -5 pm both days. Can’t wait to display this brand new oil.
“Grand Manan Island, NB, Swallowtail Lighthouse”, 24″ x 30″, #1650 was created especially for the Society of Canadian Artists exhibition in Halifax, Nova Scotia at the prestigious Halifax Club. I am delighted that this oil on canvas painting was juried into this show for the Society’s elected members. The official opening is to be held on Sunday, September 30 from 2 to 6 pm and the show continues until the end of December.
My wife Beth and I did a bike tour of Grand Manan Island some years ago. We stayed at a charming B & B called the Compass Rose where we enjoyed seafood chowder, fresh lobster and New Brunswick brown bread fresh from the oven. We were adopted by the non resident (although you would never know it) cat, known as Emilio, the Gourmet Cat. We saw how dulse is harvested and made and met many of the local residents as we travelled around the Island. Almost all the residents were connected in some way to the fishing industry. It was one of our most memorable trips and treking out to Swallowtail Lighthouse was one of the highlights.
“Into Spring Woodlands” has been accepted into the Art Collection of the Government of Ontario via the Ontario Society of Artists. As part of the collection, the painting could be displayed in the offices of senior officials, government offices or buildings. I am honoured to have one of my paintings in this collection.
My wife Beth Mlacak was presented with a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. She was nominated by Marianne Wilkinson, Councillor, Ward 4, Kanata North, the City of Ottawa. Beth was presented with the medal and a certificate by Gordon O’Connor, MP for Carleton Mississippi-Mills (our riding) at a ceremony on Parliament Hill on September 6, 2012.
Beth was instrumental in getting French Immersion programs into the Carleton Board of Education. She is a strong supporter of the arts as a founder of the Kanata Civic Art Gallery, a cooperative-run City Gallery now in its 20th year of operation. She is also a founder of Young At Art (YAA) which began at the Kanata Civic Art Gallery 16 years ago as a juried show for youth from 13-19 in the Kanata region. YAA is now a City of Ottawa-wide show which runs in 3 art galleries, one in the east, one in the west and one in the centre. Hundreds of young people participate now from many schools.
Congratulations, Beth!
